I’m visiting Canberra again and thought I’d take the opportunity to show some of the quilts that I’ve made for the grandchildren over the years.
It’s a bit hot at the moment to have the quilts on the bed but what a nice surprise to open the cupboard and find this little stack. The first quilt belongs to Martin.
This was made by ‘Just Friends’ at about the same time as his dad, Chris, was building his boat so it seemed right to make red boats that sailed all around the border of a very simple centre.
This quilt also belongs to Martin but is a lot more grown-up. I rescued these blocks and ‘Just Friends’ repaired them for me when it was my turn in 2012. At the time I don’t think they were very impressed with the task but it turned out to be a great little quilt and much more suitable for Martin.
Now for Peter’s quilts. When they lived at Ballarat, Peter and Martin shared a bedroom so it made sense to make Peter a quilt that would go with Martin’s. So this time ‘Just Friends’ made planes to fly all around the border of Peter’s quilt.
Will is is the youngest of the boys and he only has one quilt at this stage. This is one of our Triangle Quilts- the same pattern as used by Sandra and Bronwen this year. When I made this one the family was living in Cairns so the banana fabric on the back was most appropriate.
Finally, a few other quilts that I found in another cupboard and hung on the line to photograph.
…….and this one was made by my daughter Bronwyn. What a great job she did.
The reason I’m in Canberra………

Last Tuesday was our last meeting for 2014 and as usual in December we celebrated another year of friendship quilts with a special dinner where we all contribute our speciality to provide a delicious feast. This year we have designed and made another 11 quilts which will be finished sometime in the future, except for Bronwen who has already finished her red Triangles.
So what exactly did we accomplish in 2014?
February: Pam- Broken Glass
March: Elizabeth- Dresses
April: Sandra- Fractured nine patch
May: Sue- little pink and brown stars. This is not a very great photo. We laid the blocks out on Sue’s patterned rug but you can get the idea. She will make several more blocks before putting it together.
June: Jenny- Sue’s Stars. We all loved this quilt that Sue made from a kit. The 8 point stars are joined with a zig zag sashing.
So Jenny made her own VERY LOUD version of Sue’s quilt.
July: Bronwen chose to make a quilt that up till now we had only made as an ‘I Spy’ for children. I’ve lost count of the number of these that I’ve seen and each one is quite spectacular. Bronwen made hers using bright colourful florals. It’s a great design, very easy and fun to make. It comes from this book-
August: Annette- Courthouse Steps
September: Judith- Retro Hexagons
October: Annette- Scrap String
November: Sandra, like Bronwen chose the Triangle Quilt for her grandson Ben.
December: Pam’s Ohio Star. What a stunning quilt this will be. Pam used a big grey and white spot for the background of the strong yellow stars.
We’ll begin the new year with our first meeting in February at Jenny’s place.

Quilting today was at my place. Even though it was a hot and steamy day we quilted away and had lots of ‘Show and Tell’, mainly of the ‘Museum Quilts’ that many of us have been making. The pattern is one of Judy Newman’s designs and we all loved it and made it up in our own individual ways.
Bronwen made this version about 5 years ago. It’s very Bronwen -pretty with lots of pink – a lovely, soft and soothing quilt. She even quilted it using the quilting design in the pattern.
But now, 5 years later, she has made the same quilt again, this time in bright, vibrant yellow and orange, very different from the pale and pretty one of 5 years ago.
Sue is working on a grey and yellow version of the same quilt. She has included some pretty impressive fussy cutting in the centre medallion.
I think it was last year that Annette mad her yellow and grey quilt. Although it basically uses the same colours as Sue is using, her quilt has a entirely different feel – a much more muted palette.
And finally here is my Museum Quilt with the last border added, not the pink that I thought it might be, but a soft greyish-sage colour- just right.
