What a wonderful way to pass such a wet and miserable day. Here we all were at Jenny’s place for a day of stitching after three days of rain.

Elizabeth sat quietly working away and finished the binding on her circle quilt that  was a block-of-the month project. It has such a lot of pieces and is so bright and eye-catching. She was indeed the star of the day.

Pam was finishing this top for a friend of one of her daughters and then Amy will quilt it. It’s machine pieced but Pam is appliquéing the little squares in the middle of the large green squares and the connecting corners.

I’ve just finished reading ‘What Makes Us Tick’ by Hugh Mackay. He writes about the ten desires that interact to make us the people that we are. In the chapter about ‘The Desire to Connect’ he says …..

‘Those who make time for regular creative activity in their lives report a tranquility of mind that is otherwise hard to achieve: the narrow focus of the creative process admits no distractions, and that’s therapeutic in itself.

Do we have to do it well? Not at all, though it becomes more satisfying as we get better at it, which is why starting off with a good teacher is a good idea. But we only have to do it for the therapeutic benefits to flow. Other people don’t have to listen to us sing or play. No one else ever has to read what we’ve written. The pictures we paint never have to be hung: plenty of artists just keep painting over their old stuff.’

Isn’t that just what we do all the time? How often do we struggle with an answer to the question, ‘Who is this quilt for?’

Do we need more quilts? No.

Do we need more fabric? No.

Are we the best quilters in the world? No.

We just enjoy what we do and the company of others who think the same way as we do. That’s why we love to quilt.
